At the end of the book, I was very surprised to see that Paul was the only soldier left out of all the original friends that started out in the book. Then I was even more surprised when I read the he too, had died. The war changes everyones lives and we see how much it really affected these boys' lives. It effects people strongly, most of the time in a negative way, even though some consider it good.
