- Himmelstoss returns from the Front and tries to make amends with his company after experiencing the horrors of the war, he bcomes generous with food and gives them easy jobs
- Paul recieves a 17 day leave to home, when he returns, he founds out that his mother his ill with cancer and that the civilian population is slowly starving and feels like he no longer feels at home
- A major becomes angry that Paul did not salute him in the street, and as a punishment, he makes him march in the street, to avoid another similar incident, he dresses as a civilian
- Paul visits Kemmerich's mother to tell her of her son's died and lied telling her that he died quickly with little pain and suffering
- Paul returns to a training camp where there is a prison next to camp filled with Russian prisoners, when Paul sees them he is suprised and cannot believe that these prisoners are the enemy
- Paul does not see a difference between himself and the Russian soldiers and does not see the reason to be shooting at them
- Paul even decided to give all his cigarettes to the Russian prisoners as well as some of his potato cakes that he recieved from his family back home
- Also Paul stabs a French soldier for the first time and then uses a bandage to cover up the wound that he created and Paul gives the French soldier some water as well
