Reading Response Chapter 4-6 AQWF

• The Second Company is assigned to lay barbed wire at the front, an extremely dangerous task



• As the soldier's trucks pass a house, they suddenly hear geese, and Kat and Paul agree to take the geese and feast on them on their way back



• The sound of gunfire and shells is heard by the recruits, scaring them



• Kat explains to the recruits how to distinguish which guns are firing by listening to the sound of the blasts



• Kat senses that there wuill be bombardment later that night



• Paul ruminates that, for the soldier, the earth takes on a new significance at the front: he buries his body in it for shelter, and it recieves him everytime he throws himslef down in a fold, furrow, or hollow



• Kat's predictions comes true and the company is bombarded, every soldiers scrambles for cover and a boy cowardly hides behind Paul



• "We march up, moody or good-tempered soldiers-we reach the zone where the front begins and become on the instant human animals."



• Himmelstoss arrived in the camp, he was caught tormenting his recruits excessively and had been sent to the front as a punishment



• Himmelstoss orders Tjaden to stand up, but Tjaden moons in in disrepect



• Himmelstoss gets the authorities to complain on Tjaden and get justice



• Kropp insults Himmelstross and both Tjaden and Kropp are both put on trial for subordination


• Himmelstross is given a lecture about power


• Kropp and Tjaden are given light punishments
