Chapters 1-3:
Since none off the soldiers have a family or wives or kids it seems easier to go out and fight. Knowing they have nothing to really come home for but their parents. I feel like it would be easier to deal with everything if you aren't home sick. "Our early life is cut off from the moment we came here p.19." Also having a hard officer like Corporal Himmelstoss I think would be a good thing learning to deal with hard things, and getting to be thick skinned like they said in the book.
