Hot Topics: Legalizing Marijuana
In class today, a lot of the opinions shared in some sort of way made sense. Even my opinion on this topic is not fully clear. If i could choose, I would want only the people with real medical problems to use it but thats not realistic is it. I greatly agree with what Natasha added on to my comment. Many teens today have gotten in to smoking marijuana, and I believe the feeling of rebelling, or the thrill of knowing it is an illegal drug. is what makes it exciting to do. Legalizing may lower the amount of kids who do smoke weed because that feeling of a thrill wouldnt be there since it would be legal. But legalizing goes against my moral beliefs about smoking marijuana. Either way, it will be around everyone : teens, adults, etc. If stayed illegal, people will still find ways to get it. If its legal, people will have it, but wouldnt have to go through the medicinal system to get their hands on it. All the things people thing about marijuana, how its one of the healthiest drugs you could possibly do, but thats just it. At a certain point, it will not satisfy, and become the gateway drug to other, extremely serious drugs such as meth and cocaine. Thinking that is an exxageration is silly, because it happens all the time. Another comment i really liked was Cameron Andersons. If we legalize marijuana, people will start asking to legalize other drugs. Why only this drug?

If it were legalized, it would only be legal for people 21 or older. So technically, teens still would have to possess it illegally to have it. So the only reason I would say legalize it would be so we could tax it, and bring in more revenue for California. Maybe we could introduce a "drug tax" or something and make it like 20% of the sale price instead of the regular 9.75% sales tax. That way, it might help discourage people from doing marijuana so much.
ReplyDeleteFreddys right. If weed is legalized it wouldn't change at all for anyone under 21. and it would be so expensive no one would buy it once the initial idea of legal weed was over. And not nearly as many people do other hardcore drugs like meth and cocaine so theres no way majority rule would win and those drugs would be legalized.
ReplyDeletePeople under 21 would still get that feeling of " I beat the law. Lets do it again." if weed stays illegal. But if we legalize it then more and more people i think would smoke it cause before they might now have wanted to get caught smoking it or getting into trouble with it. Then there would be more and more people wanting other drugs to become illegal. Marajuana should i think only be legalized with extreme medical problems. I think it should still be illegal cause it is infact a drug and it is killing you. It kills the brain cells and it may not kill you as fast as cigs or other drugs but it slowly is. So i think it should stay illegal.
ReplyDeleteI agree with you, because if you leagalize it, it could make people think why can't other drugs be legalized and fight for other drugs to be. And like Freddy said you wouldn't be aloud to use it still till you were 21 or older so you would still feel like you were breaking the law. So if we legalized it people wouldnt stop doing it so I don't think it would make that big of a difference except maybe more people do it. So I don't think it should be legalized.
ReplyDeleteI agree with Chad and Freddy if it is legalized it would just be treated like alcohol and tobacco, they would have an age requirement. In fact if it were legal it would probably be even harder for people under the age to get it, just look at alcohol it is harder to get not a lot harder but it is harder to get than marijuana. So if/when marijuana is legal it will probably be harder for young people to get. :(
ReplyDeleteMarijuana can be a gateway to other drugs, but just because people might want other drugs to be legalized, its not their choice. you definatly should be 21 in order to smoke weed not only so your older, but also for brain development.
ReplyDeleteI really don't have an opinion on this one yet, all i do know is that when the decision comes out i really hope that california has the decency to say ok this is what it is lets not try to do what we did with prop 8
