Stem Cell Research

In my Speech and Debate class last year, we saw a video one day, that shocked me. It was about stem cell research. In the video, a TV channel went undercover to find the "scientists" that claimed they could cure any disease with stem cell research. What happened was that they followed a man who was going to go to one of these "scientists" in San Diego, to cure a cancer that he had, which was a rare cancer, so there was no treatment for it, but somehow, some people claimed they could cure him. The old man paid $700,000 {all of his life savings and retirement money}, believing that the "scientists" were his last hope. During the TV show the "scientists" did some "therapy." When the old man asked how they did it, the "scientist" made up some mumbo jumbo which sounded very logistic and scientific to the old man. In the end, the TV show revealed that he was just another fraud trying to make money, and he was arrested. There are many people like this man across the United States, that take advantage of people's diseases with fake remedies, if we found the cure to cancer with stem cell research, then these frauds might start actually curing people with rare diseases. We have already come so far, we have made some progress, what is the point in turning back now? I think the government should fund stem cell research.

  1. i think we should fund stem cell research because technology has advanced so far in the last 10 years and in the next ten years we may be able to perfect stem cell research who knows? this will be beneficial towards millions of people and why not give it a shot? we can help cure may disease if this will work.

  2. Yeah. Researching this topic for 10 years is a vast amount of work. Stopping this research after 10 years would put those 10 years in vain.

  3. I agree that we should fund it but not from embryos. Adults have stem cells just not as many. So we can get as many as we can out of adults and not get them from embryos. But I think they should do more research to see if they could find a cure.
